When ‘It’ girl Molly discovers that her accountant has run off with her inheritance, she is reduced to nannying uptight eight year-old Ray
RATED PG\r\nCAST Brittany Murphy, Dakota Fanning, Heather Locklear, Jesse Spencer \r\nDIRECTOR Boaz Yakin \r\nSCREENPLAY Julia Dah\r\nRUNNING TIME 92 mins \r\n\r\nIn this frothy Manhattan comedy, a rock star’s swinging socialite daughter (Murphy) loses her cushy inheritance and is forced to take a job as a nanny to a precocious eight-year-old tyrant (Fanning). Big kid learns how to grow up; little adult discovers how to have fun. \r\n\r\nYes, it may as well have been called “About A Girl”, and the film is unevenly pitched between scatterbrained comedy and transparent tugs on the heartstrings. But the sheer charisma of the performances from Murphy (in screwball Just Married mode) and the superbly caustic Fanning (from I Am Sam) manages to float a sentimental script that frequently fizzes where it should pop. \r\n\r\nThe ladies are stars, and they surely deserve much better material. Also featured is Australia’s Jesse Spencer playing Brit’s dubiously talented, Justin Timberlake-meets-Morrissey downtown man.\r\n\r\nLUKE GOODSELL
