After the big announcement that The Sapphires has earned $6.4million at the Aussie box office, the week has just got even better for the makers of the smash hit Australian musical.

Not only has the feel good tale of a ‘60s aboriginal girl group who travelled to Vietnam to entertain the US troops won over audience hearts, it has now gained the approval of The Australian Writers Guild.

Tonight The Sapphires was awarded both the Major AWGIE Award for the most outstanding script of 2012 and the AWGIE Award for Feature Film Adaptation. Written by Tony Briggs and Keith Thompson, the script is based on the journey of Tony’s mother and an extraordinary time in her life.

Other winners included Michael Lucas proving that he is a star on the rise by winning two AWGIE Awards, for Not Suitable For Children in the Feature Film Original category and Offspring: Episode 206 in the Television Series category. Michael Lucas, who wrote the film with his own cancer scare in mind, returned from climbing Mount Killimanjaro to collect his awards.

Susan Smith’s powerful Mabo won the AWGIE Award for theTelemovie Original category cementing her place as an iconic Australian writer who was also responsible for Brides of Christ.
